Under UK law there is no requirement that a Contract of Employment is recorded in a written document. However, to attempt to alleviate disputes, section 1 of the Employment Rights Act 1996 makes it a legal requirement that all employees whose employment is going to last for one month or more, are within two months of the commencement of their employment issued with a “statement of employment particulars.”
Whist the law does not prescribe the format of the statement it does state what must be included in the statement.
